Prof. Narayan Chandra Barai is one of Bangladesh’s most distinguished ophthalmologists, with nearly five decades of dedicated service in clinical ophthalmology, academic medicine, and community eye care. Renowned for his vast surgical experience and unwavering commitment to excellence, he has devoted his career to restoring vision and improving the quality of life for countless patients.
Born on 2 April 1951, Prof. Barai completed his SSC (1967) and HSC (1969) with First Division. During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, while pursuing his MBBS degree, he served as a Medical Assistant at the Salvation Army Hospital in India for nine months, providing medical care to those affected by the war. He earned his MBBS in 1975 and is registered with the Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BMDC Registration No. 5176). He later obtained his Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO) in 1982.
Prof. Barai joined the Government Health Service as an Assistant Surgeon on 6 September 1976 and steadily advanced through various academic and clinical positions. He served as Registrar in Ophthalmology, Junior Consultant, Senior Consultant, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and ultimately Professor of Ophthalmology before retiring from government service in 2017. He currently continues his professional work as a Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology, while maintaining an active clinical and surgical practice.
Over the course of his career, Prof. Barai has provided ophthalmic care to more than 475,000 patients and has successfully performed over 50,000 eye surgeries, making him one of the country’s most experienced eye surgeons. His expertise spans cataract surgery, glaucoma management, anterior segment surgery, and comprehensive ophthalmic care.
Surgical Journey & Special Interests
Evolution of Cataract Surgery
His surgical journey reflects the remarkable evolution of modern cataract surgery—from intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE) in community eye camps, through extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and cryo-assisted techniques, to modern intraocular lens implantation.
In 2008, he completed advanced Phacoemulsification Training under Dr. Amar Agarwal Vasavada at ICIRC, Ahmedabad, India, and subsequently introduced phaco cataract surgery into his practice.
Glaucoma Expertise
Prof. Barai has a special interest in glaucoma diagnosis and management. As a Life Member of the Glaucoma Society, he has regularly participated in national and international glaucoma conferences, including scientific meetings in at least seven countries.
His continued pursuit of knowledge enables him to provide up-to-date medical and surgical treatment for glaucoma patients.

Education & Research
In addition to his clinical work, Prof. Barai has made significant contributions to medical education and research. He has published scientific papers on glaucoma, dry eye disease, corneal disorders, and anterior segment surgery, and has authored several books on ophthalmology and the Bangladesh Liberation War.
